Do Bad Things Happen To Good People?

We had a guest speaker at our Church this Sunday 29 March, while we are still in quarantine for five more days, we listened via Facebook.  And the preacher brought a great message.  He posed the question do bad things happen to good people?  Why does God allow these things to happen?  Why does God allow tornados like the one in Jonesboro, Arkansas on 29 March, or the 10 tornadoes reported 31 March in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Georgia, or the 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Idaho 1 April, floods, hurricanes, famine, diseases, plagues and viruses like we have now in COVID-19.

Does God allow these things to happen, he created the Earth, he even allows the devil to tempt us to test our faith see JOB.

Job 1. “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.  2. And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.  3. His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.  4. And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and drink with them.  5. And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all:  for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned , and cursed God in their hearts.  Thus did Job continually.  6. Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.  7. And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou?  Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it.  8. And the Lord said unto Satan, hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and eschewed evil?  9. Then Satan answered the Lord, and said Doth Job fear God for nought?  10. Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side?  thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.  11. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.  12. And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand.  So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.” (Holman King James Version Study Bible 2012)

You can read more about Job in the Bible, but the point is that God told Satan to test him and that Job has integrity and will curse thee to thy face.

So why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?

Mark 10:17 “And when he has gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?  18. And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou good?  there is none good but one that is God.  19. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor thy father and mother.  20. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these things have I observed from my youth.  21. Then Jesus beholding him loved him and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.  22. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.” (Holman King James Version Study Bible 2012)

You see we’re not as good as we think we are.  We may do good things from time to time, we may help our neighbor from time to time, but does it take a life altering event to help our neighbors?  We’re proud too, so we think we are good.  We all may not have committed adultery, or stolen, or lied or cheated, or even broken one of God’s commandments?  But we’re not perfect, only God is perfect.  We are all sinners, we all have bad thoughts and we all do bad things, or maybe we covet what others have.  We are selfish people, not all of us, but some bought supplies that we may not need that others may need more than us.  We have blurred the lines of right and wrong.  We’ve made abortion into a selfish decision stemming from irresponsible acts and it’s sad.

We’re sinners, we’re not good, that’s why we can’t say that God lets bad things happen to good people.  God allows bad things to happen to sinners, we’re all sinners, none of us are perfect.

That’s why we should all repent and ask for God’s forgiveness.  I feel sad for people that have not accepted Jesus into their lives.  John 14:5 “Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?  6. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Every day, we see more tornadoes, more storms, more people afflicted by COVID19.  God is mad and we need to ask for his forgiveness, repent before it is too late.

I believe there is more work to do, there are more lost people to bring to Jesus, there are more seeds to plant, and more hearts for God to convict, let’s make Jesus famous, let’s spread the good news.
